Wow!! 1959 seems so long ago and maybe because it is. As is the case with all of you a lot has happened in 50 years. For me, after graduation I continued my very “lucrative” employment with Lee Seamons while attending YVC with certain of my friends from Sunnyside. Needless to say very little was accomplished in those first post high school years academically hanging with that bunch. From there I matriculated to Western Washington University and shortly thereafter I married Ardythe Shaw ( former Sunnyside gal). I began my career in business in 1965 when I was hired by the Bon Marche Corporation. Stayed with those folks until 1969 when I was fortunate enough to begin my long relationship with the Nordstrom Corporation. The rest they say is history, I retired in 1997 as the Co-Chairman of Nordstrom. Today we live in Woodway, north of Seattle, enjoy our son Jeff, our two dogs, Indy and Dudley, our home and yard, rekindling old friendships with my buddies from high school, golf, the Mariners and the occasional “Makers Mark” in the evening with family and friends. Both AJ and I are looking forward to our gathering in September in Sunnyside. This is going to be a lot of fun. |

Gosh, where to begin after fifty years. I left Sunnyside in the fall of 1959 and made the trek to Cheney (EWU) earning my Educational degree in 1962. I began my teaching career as a kindergarten teacher in Spokane Valley that same year. While attending Eastern I had met Bud Kinzer and we married soon after my first year of teaching. With his degree completed we moved to his home town, Walla Walla where we still reside today in the same home that we built shortly after returning to his "roots". Oh, we have added on and remodeled many times over those many years but the address is still the same. I continued to teach five more years in the Walla Walla public schools before 'retiring' to spend time at home when our children were young. We have three children, one girl and two boys, and when they were ready to begin pre school I helped out, first by substituting, and then eventually taught my own classes. Bud teased me about my full time job of two half days a week, but it was perfect for me! I loved it and ended up staying there for 36 years!! Bud retired from education as a middle school principal in 1992 and began a commercial/residentual paint contracting business, which he is still involved in today, but as we get a bit older he is becoming much more selective in what he does. Fifteen years ago I reluctantly let him talk me into taking up the game of golf. At first it seemed like 4 hours on a golf course was just silly especially when I had other things I needed to be doing, but it wasn't long before I was finding myself, much to Bud`s amazement, enjoying the game very much. Now we golf together at least a couple of times a week and I often spend another couple of days playing with my girl friends! We have been in Walla Walla for so long and are fortunate to have many very close special friends who share many of the same interests that we do. I love working in our yard, but only work when the sun shines!!! I have many, many roses and flowers that require much of my time, but I do enjoy it so. I also am an avid reader and often wish there were more hours in a day to relax and read a good book. We are blessed with five darling grandchildren, 4 boys and I girl, who range in age from 3 1/2 to 9 years of age. Unfortunately none of them live near here, but we do make visiting them a very high priority in our lives as they are so much fun to be around. We have found that grandparenting is an amazing thing. All in all we have been very fortunate in our lives. We love Walla Walla and its bustling new wine industry. We even took the plunge a few years ago and are now bonifide shareholders of Forgeron Winery and have even become semi expert with the crush and bottling each year. In a nutshell that is our life. I am so looking forward to seeing all of you in Sept! |

It’s been a fast 50 year run, but a darn good one!
I have two wonderful daughters, Debbie a Recruiter at Yakima Memorial Hospital, and Denise a teacher at Barge Lincoln Elementary, in the Yakima School District. I am happy to have the time to really enjoy being “Papa” to three good-looking, quick-witted and fun-loving grandsons, ages 4, 7, and 9. (Who will I ride the bumper cars with when they get too old?)
The last 42 years I have been fortunate to have a successful career with Prudential. This has provided me the ability to travel quite a bit not only for business but also with family and great life-long friends.
I still enjoy my motorcycle although lately I probably spend more time washing it than I do riding it!
When I was young I was called a “young man in a hurry”. Strange, I haven’t heard that in a long time. However, if anyone says “Trip...” I’m ready to go!

Any day above ground, is a good day. After high school, I tried college, first at YVCC, then in Utah, even took a course on Guam. My hardest classes were math and English, just like in high school. With the Cold War escalating, the draft caught up to me about the same time my dad told me to 'join or be joined' and out of the five selections, went into the USAF, one week shy of my 22nd birthday and the Cuban Missile Crises. That was the best thing i did in life. I found a home. Military service: 15 Oct. 62 to 31 Aug. 83 Twenty years eleven months and 15 days., Could have stayed longer, was assured E8 if I did, but it was time to leave. I was an E7 filling an E9 position, in the Pentagon, the top of the totem pole. Was even in the Pentagon Phone Book. My boss was a two star with three star power. I could go no higher and all the other assignments were lower with more headaches. Eighteen years, five months and 15 days was spent in the United States. Not bad for a run of the mill admin weinie. Some were rather interesting assignments. Claim to fame: Pentagon Whistle Blower We returned to the valley in September l983 at the request of family, which was a mistake. During cherry season the wife and I would help cousin during cherry harvest. In 1990, the wife and I worked for US Census Bureau and in September l990 I went to work for Bowden's Auto Parts as a counter parts person. In November 2006, after working at nearly all the parts stores in town except NAPA, everyone agreed that enough was enough and I became a very happy retiree. Since then I am enjoying life. Doing things that I couldn't do working, especially weekends. Trying to see more of the Northwest. Traveling anywhere we can get to by land. Sea and plane are out. I met my wife to be, Sergeant Bridget Werner, when I returned from Viet Nam in 1969 and was reassigned to the 90th Strategic Missile Wing, Francis E. Warren AFB, WY. She was the Orderly Room Clerk and processed me on base. We dated from August until she got reassigned to Clark AB, PI in November. Then in January 1970, I got reassigned to Head- quarters, Strategic Air Command, in Omaha, NE and since the halfway point between Nebraska and the Philippines was Honolulu, HI that was where we tied the knot on March 21, 1970 in a non-denominational church. (ticked off both sets of parents). Biggest goof after marriage. Talking her out of making the USAF a career, but who knows. Life is nothing but a bunch of decisions and the consequences of those decisions. . |

50 years gone by - How the time does fly - hard to believe. After graduation I went to Beauty College and then worked in Prosser. I got married the summer of 1961. My husband Charley got drafted and we left for the Army Sept. 1961. We traveled a while, courtesy of the Army. While in the Army we decided to buy a farm in Bickleton, WA (which I still own). After the Army tour we moved back to Bickleton in 1963 and built our home on the wheat farm. Our oldest daughter was born in 1964 and the second daughter was born in 1967. Charley and I were married 6 1/2 years when he lost his life in a work related accident. (The girls were only 4 years old and 4 months old). I was a widow for 8 years. In September 1976 I married an old school friend Russ Krumsick (Russ graduated in 1961) and added 2 stepchildren to our family. We have been married for 32 years now. I have 1 granddaughter who just turned 15 years old and 4 step grand children, ranging in age from 8 to 17 years old. I was very fortunate to have two great men in my life. We do enjoy camping in our 5th wheel RV now. Have you found out yet that it's kind of scary to be on medicare? It does funny things to you some times (ha ha)!

At the end of my senior year I saw Carla Marion walking down the hall in front of Cora Harms typing class. She was a sophomore and for some reason that was the first time that I had really noticed her. We dated for the rest of the summer and I then left for the U of W. We were engaged two years later on the night of her graduation and married a year later. During our next 14years we moved 17 times as we completed college and experienced the NFL. During that time our three sons were born. Upon retirement from the NFL (after 12 years) Carla and I wanted to raise our family in an environment similar to the one that we were raised in. We decided to move back to the Northwest and we settled in Selah, Washington. I was hopeful that I could continue my athletic carreer in coaching, but for whatever reason I ended up in management. I had the wonderful opportunity of leading three different companies over a period of 25 years. I retired in 2002. I am grateful for a fulfilled life, for eternal hope and a secure future. My trust is in my Heavenly Father who is always with me and is the light of my life.

I spent 3 years in the Army 59-62 (Guided Missles, then Military Police). Returning to Sunnyside fall of 1962. I Married Mary Ransier (SHS Class of 61) that Nov. I worked for Safeway (Food Production Center) in Grandview for 3 years before joining the City Police Dept in The Dalles, Or. I retired from the city in '94, after 29 years of service, then spent the next 11 years working for the Sheriff's Dept as a 9-1-1 Dispatcher and then as the Emergency Management Dept Manager. During my tenure with the city I earned three 2 year degrees, all career related. After 40 years of dealing in emergencies, of one kind or another, followed by a couple years of R&R (rest and relaxation), I now drive for Crew Shuttle Service transporting railroad crews. Mary and I remain in The Dalles. Our daughter and family live in Hermiston, Or. and our son and family live in Lacey, Wa. Both have one daughter and two sons. One of our grand-daughters turns sweet 16 this weekend. We shall be celebrating with her and family, so will not be attending our class 50th. Sorry, but family comes first. The Lord has truely blessed and protected us over the years. Best regards to all - Class of '59 |

After graduation I had no desire to go to college but I’ve never wanted to stop learning. I moved to Yakima in August, 1959, worked for an insurance company and lived in an apartment with two girlfriends. In 1963 I met and married Bob Lovitt of Coeur d’Alene, ID who was a pharmacist with PayLess Drugs in Yakima. Through all the buyouts he stayed with the same company until he retired the end of 2005. We moved around for awhile living in the western states. In Pendleton, OR we learned to love professional rodeo. In 1975 I went to work as a legal assistant for what I thought would be four months and I stayed 8 years because it was fun. When we moved back to Yakima in 1983 I became a paralegal. I retired in 1986 when our daughter turned 14 and our son was almost 12 --- too old for child care and too young to be left with a swimming pool and no adult supervision. I loved the legal field but have never missed working in it. It was through that experience that I had the opportunity to co-author a book for law offices (now outdated and out of print) called Handbook for Legal Secretaries. We moved to Utah the summer our son graduated from high school and Bob became a pharmacy district manager for PayLess Drugs based in Salt Lake City. It was there we found that we love the NBA. Utah is where I earnestly wrote for publication and also wrote Bible studies that I taught at our church. For the next several years I made the rounds as a speaker at women’s retreats, women’s meetings and other church gatherings. I still write Bible studies to teach but don’t feel called to do much public speaking. We’ve always said that “some day” we’d move to Hayden Lake in North Idaho and we did that in 1998 and promptly fell in love with Gonzaga Basketball. We built a home overlooking the back side of Hayden Lake less than a mile from the lakefront summer cabin we’ve owned for many years. We live on 60 acres bordered by U. S. Forest timber. Unfortunately, we only own five of the 60 acres. Our house is nestled against the mountain and we cut our Christmas tree every Thanksgiving weekend behind our house. WHERE I am was never as important as the PERSON I am. All those years of moving state to state didn’t challenge my sense of who I was because of what was in my heart. Some of you undoubtedly understand that. Bob and I share our faith, our lives, our peace of mind, two children (one of each) and six grandchildren (three of each). While some of our class members are great-grandparents, our oldest grandchild is only ten and the youngest was born this spring. My family is the heartbeat of my life. Bob and I are voracious readers and I continue to write. I’ve learned that I need a good cup of coffee, a comfortable bed, and unlimited power. (grin) Bob needs his horses and we have three. Today I can say that my biggest fear is waking up in 2019 still the same woman I am today. I have a sense of urgency about reading all the books I own. I should be able to manage that if I live to be 120. There are days when I have outlived my own memory but overall life is good. Middle-age has crept up on me (I cannot tell a lie) although I think I’m still 35 years old; but, my body can’t fool a flight of stairs. After 46 years together Bob and I still make each other laugh. |

After graduating from high school, I had no desire to attend a four year college and instead elected to attend a business school in Spokane. After living in Spokane five years, I then moved to Seattle--which I still consider my home. After I got married, I spent the next years working and then raising two great kids. After they were in grade school, I decided I wanted to go back to school and obtain a degree. I attended the University of Washington and received degrees in Nutrition and Chemistry. Fourteen years ago we moved to Arizona, and I might add I went kicking and screaming, however, it was a good move for my husband. I've spent most of my time in Arizona substitute teaching, primarily at the high school level--limiting the classes I sub to English, science and special education. It has been very challenging, to say the least. Since we plan to move back to the Pacific Northwest, this past February we bought some property on Whidbey Island and hope to build there in the very near future. I miss my kids, family, friends and two super grandsons. My favorite pastime is reading! I joined a book club a number of years ago and now read at least three books a week--sometimes more. I wish I could be at the reunion but I will be at my grandson's 11th birthday party in Seattle--something I look forward to every year. Juanita, you did a superb job designing the website!! |

I was married in 1962 and have 4 children, 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. In 1998 I lost 180 pounds (which was my ex husband) and I feel so much better! I was in the 'rag' business for 20 years off and on in Yakima and Sunnyside. From 1990-1994 I managed the Mid Valley Mall in Sunnyside, and now I feed the starving seniors, meals on wheels, at the Senior Citizens Center. I am getting a view of what is in our future and how we will end up.I moved in March of 2012 to the Canyon Lakes area in Kennewich and love it. |

Glad to be an "honorary" grad of sunnyside! After High School & 2 years of college, I work in the grocery business for 10 years. I bought a retail boat store and for the next 25 years I had dealerships in Southern California, and manufactured Custom High Performance Boats. I started a new career at age 44 with New York Life Insurance Co. During that time I found myself "single" for the third time. I found out from my mother, Donna's phone number in Kelso. After frequent flyer miles to visit her, I convinced her to come to California and marry me! My father at age 87, married us in my son's back yard! In 2006 when we retired, I kept my promise to Donna to return to Washington where her kids and grandkids are! God is good! We are blessed.

50 years is a long time to summarize. It started with nursing school in Portland where I met and married Sam Parker. We celebrate 48 years in October. There followed four kids of whom we are very proud, and six grandchildren-lots of fun.I worked parttime in various facilities while raising the kids, and then worked for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oregon for over 14 years and through many mergers. After retirement I worked for them for another 8 years each spring to do a required medical records survey. I have lots of friends from the Blue Cross years and loved it. After family, friends and church, where I assist the minister, lead singing, and put together an Advent Devotional booklet each year, my great love is singing. In 1994 I was fortunate to audition for Dr. Jonathan Griffith, a professor in the music department at Marylhurst College here in the Portland area, who was slated to be the resident conductor at Carnegie Hall in NYC. I have been blessed to sing in choirs with him at the helm 4 or 5 times at Carnegie Hall and on trips to Spain, France, Italy, and this past July in China where we did concerts in Beijing and Shanghai. |

Committed Relationship
50 years...who can remember it all? I was fortunate enough to stumble into a job the summer after Graduation. Graveyard shift at Del Montes can manufacturing plant in Toppenish. I stuck it out for four years fulltime plus fulltime at college and graduated with a degree in Education in May of 1963. Started teaching in Grandview Jr. High, on to Longview HS and then to assistant professor at Portland State U for a couple of years. A desperate Assistant Superintendent recruited me to be a high school principal which entertained me for 5 years. I switched gears for a 7 years and became a Director of Human Resources for a couple of International Certified Public Accounting firms. I finally decided to return to Education and had saved enough money to buy several Sylvan Learning Center franchises. Many years later I moved back to a small town in Oregon as the Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and finance. In 1996 I retired, sold everything, bought a 38 ft. live aboard boat and left for Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. 6 years of bliss fishing, golfing and relaxing. Returned to the States in 2002 and moved to Carlton, WA in the Methow valley. I live one mile from Carlton on the river. Carlton has 60 residents, a million deer and lots of mountains. I still hunt, fish, horseback ride, read, travel, camp and enjoy my grand children. At our 45th class reunion I ran into Deanna Duncan and we have been together ever since. Looking forward to seeing everyone and having some serious fun!!!! |

My worm factory was featured on Good Morning America. See the clip here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bQhTJHUBWMThe Bellingham Herald did an article on my company as well. See the article here: http://www.bellinghamherald.com/581/story/700054.html I have been keeping busy. Off next week to speak at a Garden Show along with Paul James, HGTV “Gardening By the Yard”. My topic is “Worms”, composting worms that is. Turn your junk mail, kitchen waste, newspaper and cardboard into nutrient rich compost for your house plants and garden. In my spare time I have been scanning B&W negatives, hundreds of them from the 50’s in Sunnyside. Go to: http://www.flickr.com/photos/39741265@N06/ then to Sets. After graduating from Seattle Pacific College, I taught school in Aumsville and Canby Oregon. In 1967, we moved to Camp Meeker CA, where I managed Alliance Redwoods Camp and developed an outdoor education program. Four years later, we moved to Pleasant Hill, CA and taught in the Mount Diablo School District. While attending Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church, I organized a 100 family food buying group in the days before Costco. There were 10 groups of 10 families; each group was responsible for a food commodity. Big trucks of: frozen foods, cases of orange juice, bakery goods, 5 gal pails of brownie mix, cheese in 40 lbs blocks, would unload in garages and within hours the goods were all distributed. These were very affluent folks and they purchased nearly all their food thru our buying group. It was quite amazing and operated for over 6 years. I began teaching a class “How to live on less and enjoy it” in the adult education night school. The only requirement, the teacher must maintain at least 12 students for the full 8 weeks. I always had at least 40 and no one ever drops out. I was an invited guest on KGO radio talk show several times as a result. My fourth grade classes were known for their field trips. Over the 6 years, my classes camped in Yosemite, toured the Gold fields, Sutter Fort, road BART on the opening day with 35 4th graders, but the most memorable was a two night outing at Fort Point, a civil war fort under the Golden Gate Bridge, two days before school started. You should have seen the other 4th grade classes as our bus was unloaded at school. Read on about Ralph adventures go to: Cascadesales.com/Ralph. |

After graduation, I attended beauty school in Seattle and later in Yakima. While in Seattle, I met my future husband (Larry) who was in the Navy at the time. After he was discharged, we were married 6 months later in 1962 and settled in Longview where he worked for Weyerhaeuser and attended Lower Columbia College. Two years later, while in Longview, our son (David) was born and two years later our daughter (Connie) was born. In 1967, Larry transferred to WSU and in 1969 graduated with a degree in forestry. He accepted a position with the Oregon Dept of Forestry and we moved first to Astoria, OR, a year later near Roseburg, OR and 2 years later to Forest Grove, OR where we reside today. After our children were in high school, I worked at the Washington County Court House in Hillsboro for 10 years. We are both retired at this time and have enjoyed traveling to most of the national parks and points of interest in the western U.S., Hawaii, Florida, New York and New England. |

2019 Update:
We still live in Vancouver, WA - same house for 31 years now. We spend some time in our 5th wheel trailer, and I still ride my Goldwing motorcycle when I get a chance. Our 26th family reunion was held this year; if we were all able to attend there would be 32 of us. We have 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. God has given us many friends and family, and we are thankful for all we have. I hope to be at the reunion this year. _________________________________________ From 2009: I moved from Lynden, WA in 1956. It was culture shock coming from a small town, small farm and a small Christian school to a large (to me) public school, and living in town. Those weren’t my best years, but that doesn’t mean that nothing good came from them. A month after graduation, I was engaged to Rose Marie Gortsema (SHS), then left for six months active duty with the Army Reserve. We were married in September 1960. In August 1961 I enlisted in the Regular Army, spending three years in Minneapolis/St. Paul. I got out in 1964, and we moved with our three kids to Lynden. I reenlisted in 1965 and decided to I needed to pick something and stay with it – so I did.
Assignments included Cheney, WA, Fort Bliss, TX, and three years at Fort Richardson, AK. When I went to Vietnam in 1970, Rose and the kids moved back to Sunnyside. In 1971 we were at Fort Lewis, WA, then I requested ROTC duty and was assigned to EWSC in Cheney. This time we stayed four years, and the last year and a half I was a full time student. I graduated with a BA in Business in December 1975 – compliments of the Army (and your tax dollars).
Next was Fort Carson, CO, then in 1977 to Heidelberg, Germany. In 1980 I attended the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss, Texas, then on to the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, CA (Barstow area), where I retired with 20 years active service in February 1982.
I worked as the Personnel Manager of a photo processing company in Burbank, CA, then as the manager of a U-Haul Center in the Spokane valley. In 1985 I became a Farmers Insurance agent in Spokane, and three years later accepted their offer to work as a commercial insurance underwriter in the Vancouver, WA regional office. I completed 20 years with Farmers and retired in 2005.
We are proud of our son and two daughters, all living productive lives, with families of their own, and scattered (Oregon, California, Colorado). There are eight grands (ages from 14 – 27) and three greats (ages 4 – 8).
We’ve lived in 33 different homes since we got married, but have been in this house for almost 21 years. We have an attached shop for hobbies. We have a travel trailer and like to travel and camp. I have a Honda Goldwing motorcycle that we (well, mostly I) enjoy riding, and have been as far as Hyder, Alaska, and Cabo San Lucas, Baja, Mexico. We attend New Heights Church in Vancouver and are involved with groups on Sunday as well as a mid-week Bible study. This past March and April we traveled to Port Arthur, TX with our trailer to do hurricane (Rita and Ike) restoration work through a church group for three weeks – very rewarding.
Through all of our activities, ups, downs, good and bad, we realize that there is only one thing that matters in the end – it’s our relationship with our Creator. Based on our own efforts, we all fall short of God’s standards, but by God’s grace he paid the price for our salvation by sending his Son, Jesus, to die in our place. If we accept his sacrifice and trust Him, we will have eternal life. So, while we may be getting along in years in this life, there’s another, better life to come, and it will never end. If you don’t yet know Jesus, I encourage you to look for Him.
